As a former elementary school teacher in West New York, NJ, he embarked on a path dedicated to nurturing young minds. His tenure spanned 40 years within the Boy Scouts of America, holding various influential roles across the Northeast Region. Notably, he achieved the esteemed rank of Eagle Scout, reflecting his unwavering dedication to the scouting ethos.

Frank's impact extended far beyond his professional realm. He embodied the spirit of mentorship, guiding and uplifting both youth and adult leaders, leaving an indelible mark on generations. His legacy stands as a testament to the profound influence a single individual can have on shaping the future.

To honor his memory and perpetuate his legacy, The Key Foundation is establishing the Francis J. Barre Counselor of the Year Award, a scholarship aimed at empowering future leaders who embody Frank's spirit of mentorship and dedication to youth development.

Vervaet Grants 2023 Recipients

In 2023, The Key Foundation was pleased to award $9,005.94 in grants to ten camp projects. These projects expand existing activity programs at summer camps or are new additions to the camping programs. Congratulations to all of the recipients! The projects are as follows:

  • Expansion of the orienteering program at Horace A. Moses Scout Reservation, run by Western MA Council BSA
  • Addition of a drone operation and safety program at Treasure Valley Scout Reservation, run by Heart of New England Council BSA
  • Expansion of the STEAM program through the addition of 3D printers at Camp Wanocksett, run by Heart of New England Council BSA
  • Expansion of the aquatics paddle board program at Camp Squanto, run by Mayflower Council BSA
  • Expansion o the biking program at Camp Marshall, run by Worcester County 4-H Center
  • Expansion of the Scoutcraft program (cooking and other pioneering skills) at Camp Aquehonga, run by Greater New York Councils BSA
  • Addition of aquatic activities at Cub Scout Day Camp, run by Washington Crossing Council, BSA
  • Addition of a wiffle ball stadium and council ring at June Norcross Webster Scout Reservation, run by Connecticut Rivers Council, BSA
  • Expansion of the STEAM program through the addition of 3D printers at New England Base Camp, run by Spirit of Adventure Council BSA
  • Expansion of the welding program at TL Storer Scout Reservation, run by Spirit of Adventure Council, BSA
